Second Life is a 3D virtual world where residents develop a personna, explore, build a network of friends, and indeed create for themselves a Second Life. There are many activities in SL, and attending live musical performances is one of the more popular. Musicians from all over the Real World perform daily at the many "In World" venues.
This presents a fun opportunity for musicians to gain international exposure, build a fan base, and perform before a diverse audience. Audiences in SL typically range in size from 20 to 40 people. Some venues allow for up to 100 attendees however the performance of Second Life begins to suffer when the number of avatars in a single region goes over about 40.
The following raw, unedited video clips provide a sample of live music in Second Life. The OhMy Kidd performance at Lacey's Place during the 2010 Jamm for Genes event, an Australian charity, is a good example of one way Second Life is used to gather donations for a charitable cause. Live performers from all over Second Life donated their time and all earnings to the charity over a 3 day weekend in early August. About AUS$2000 was raised for the Children's Medical Research Institute.
